Autumn garden jobs: maintain the tools before replacing them

An autumn tidy-up does not always need a new powered machine. Start with the work you need to do and the condition of the tools already in the shed.

A rake for different spaces

Tooled Up lists the Draper Adjustable Lawn Rake at £25.95 including VAT. Its stated head width adjusts from 190 to 570 mm and it has fifteen flexible tines. That range gives you something practical to compare with narrow beds and wider lawn areas. It does not prove the rake is the right tool for every surface or for heavy debris. Match the tool to the job rather than pulling harder when it is unsuitable.

Two sharpeners, different questions

The Multi-Sharp 1601 secateur sharpener is £10.95. The retailer describes it for secateurs, pruners, loppers and pruning knives, including anvil and bypass tools. The Multi-Sharp 1501 4-in-1 garden tool sharpener is also £10.95 and lists a different set of blades, including anvil-blade cutting tools and knives. Its page explicitly says it is not suitable for scalloped or serrated edges. The same price does not make them interchangeable.

Check the blade before buying

Identify the exact tool and blade type, then read its maintenance instructions and the sharpener's guidance. A damaged or badly worn tool may need a replacement part or professional attention rather than sharpening. Follow safe handling instructions, keep fingers away from the edge and do not improvise a technique from an advertising picture. For powered equipment, use the manufacturer's isolation and servicing guidance; this article is not a substitute for it.

Buy the missing piece

Make a short list of the jobs: collecting leaves, pruning, storing tools or cleaning up. Then mark which existing tool handles each one. Buy only the gap. A rake with an adjustable head may be worth investigating if you need different widths; a sharpener is worth investigating only when it matches your blades. Add delivery to the comparison, especially for a single £10.95 item.

Our buying view

These are current retailer-listed candidates, not tools we have field-tested. Maintenance can be a sensible first step, but it is not a promise that every old tool can be made safe or effective again. Choose a sharpener by compatibility, and choose the rake by the spaces and material you need to clear.
