Before a gaming headset upgrade, check the socket

A modest wired headset can be a more useful buy than an expensive model that will not connect the way you expect. Start with your setup, then the features.

A clear starting point

Currys lists the black SteelSeries Arctis Nova 1P wired headset at £37.99. Its listed connection is a 3.5 mm jack, with a retractable microphone, earcup controls and a weight of 236 g. Those details make a practical checklist. They do not establish that its sound, microphone or comfort will suit you, because we have not tested it.

Follow the signal path

Identify the exact device you want to plug into: controller, computer, handheld or another audio device. Check its socket and whether it supports both headphones and microphone through that connection. On a computer, also check whether separate audio and microphone ports require an adapter. Do not assume a platform name in a product title settles every device in your house. The retailer's broad compatibility wording should still be checked against your exact hardware.

Think about your normal session

If you regularly move away from the screen, a cable may be the part you notice most. If you play at one desk and want to avoid another battery to charge, a wired option is worth considering. Try to establish fit, adjustment range and return conditions before buying. Weight is a useful fact to compare, but a low number cannot promise all-evening comfort.

Small gifts still need compatibility

The other inexpensive gaming listing here is the Konix Stitch Smile 3D Nintendo Switch 2 carry case, £7.97 at Currys. It is a different kind of purchase: protection and storage rather than an audio upgrade. Check that the recipient owns the named console and that the case suits their accessories. Do not buy it for an original Switch purely because the names look close. A cheap incompatible gift still creates a return.

Our buying view

The Nova 1P is a candidate for someone who wants a 3.5 mm wired headset, not our tested best headset. Settle the connection and fit first, then compare the final total including delivery. For the carry case, console identity is the first question. A specific, compatible small buy is better than a more impressive-looking wrong one.
